Su Ye extended both his hands and spread his fingers apart. He said in a serious tone, “I thought everybody knew. First, we become Mage Apprentices, then it’s Black Iron Mage, Bronze Mage, Silver Mage, and Gold Mage. Then we advance to Sage Mage, Legendary Mage, Hero, and Demigod. Finally, the tenth step, we become deities.”
Su Ye retracted a finger with every level he stated. He arrived at the level of deity right when he retracted his last finger.
His deskmates looked at Su Ye, dumbfounded. They felt as though he had truly gone insane.
There had never been a mortal who has been conferred the title of deity in the history of Ancient Greece.
1
In the legends, even people who were as intelligent as Socrates had failed at the last stage.
Niedern then smiled. “Then how are you going to become a Mage Apprentice?”
“I’ll of course start by searching for a way to become a Mage Apprentice.” Su Ye’s attitude was still very serious.
“Judging from his words, do you all think he can become a Mage Apprentice?” Niedern turned to ask the rest of the group.
Hort scratched his head and grinned as he said, “Even though I feel that there’s something off, I don’t think that there were any problems when he said he wanted to become a Mage Apprentice.”
“His last sentence was not wrong,” Laker chimed in.
The rest of the group did not know what to say but still felt as though there was something wrong.
1
Niedern did not continue. He turned to leave.
However, Su Ye stopped him and said, “Teacher, I also have a small question and hope that you will participate.”
Niedern stopped and stood by the side as he silently waited.
Su Ye’s deskmates looked at him with curiosity.
Su Ye smiled. “Now, let us change the question. Assume that the one posing the question is the director of the academy. The rest of the rules are no different from before. Answer in three seconds. If you take more than three seconds, you will fail this year. As for Teacher Niedern… If you do not answer within three seconds, resign.”
1
Niedern stared at Su Ye.
The rest of his deskmates lowered their heads and laughed in secret. Palos and Rolon still had expressionless demeanors.
“Ask the question quickly,” Niedern said.
Su Ye said, “Take out your spellbooks.”
Everyone took out their spellbooks. Teacher Niedern waved his right hand, and a spellbook appeared out of thin air.
“Alright, I’ll ask the question now. Imagine that all of you are mages and are bringing along four animals who signed Servant Contracts with you to the sea. You suddenly encounter a typhoon. The ship is about to sink, and the four animals are injured. Luckily, you see a small island in front of you. However, you realize that your resources are limited, and you can only bring one animal with you as you leave. Then, out of the four animals, which include a tiger, eagle, rabbit, and goat, which animal would you bring to the island? Answer quickly! One, two, three!”
2
Unlike Teacher Niedern, Su Ye quickly finished the count. Everyone had no choice but to choose an answer at the very first moment.
“Let’s all show our answers,” Su Ye said.
The group flipped over their spellbooks.
Palos wrote, “little rabbit.”
2
Rolon wrote, “tiger.”
1
Hort wrote, “goat.”
Jimmy unexpectedly wrote, “not choosing, escaping on my own.”
2
Laker wrote “tiger.”
Ebert wrote “eagle.”
Niedern also wrote “eagle.”
Rolon and Laker looked at each other. The top student and the runner-up did not have the best relationship with each other, but they seemed to think the same way at this moment.
Su Ye looked at the choices of the group and seemed as though he was considering something.
Jimmy asked curiously, “What’s the intention of your question? I do not believe that it would be this simple.”
The group nodded.
“Do you wish to know?” Su Ye revealed a mysterious smile.
The group nodded once again.
“Get into a group and discuss.” Su Ye moved his chair to the front of the table after he finished speaking.
“This man!” Jimmy did not know whether to cry or to laugh.
“Su Ye, finish your sentences!” Hort moved his chair and sat beside Su Ye.
Su Ye said in shock, “Let’s take you, for example. You chose ‘goat.’ What other reason do you have other than to eat it?”
“Oh? How did you know that I was afraid that there’d be nothing to eat on the island?” Hort had a look of disbelief.
“Anybody who has seen you eat would know,” Su Ye said.
“Su Ye, are you really not going to tell us?” Niedern suddenly asked.
Jimmy immediately chuckled. “Su Ye, you have to think this through. You will be offending all seven of us at the same time!”
Palos gave a heavy nod.
The rest of the group intentionally stared at Su Ye with a nasty look as if they had dubious intentions.
The honest Hort suddenly stood up and made repeated clasping motions with his fingers as if he was about to grab Su Ye’s neck.
Su Ye immediately said, “Alright, alright, I’ll tell you at the right time. You guys will definitely know the answer.”
4
“That’s more like it.” Hort sat down.
Niedern glanced at Su Ye, then walked toward the stage.
At this moment, both Jimmy and Laker sent a magical message.
“What did my choice represent? I wager that my answer surpassed your expectations and that you can’t answer.” This was Jimmy’s message.
“What is the hidden meaning behind choosing the tiger?” Laker asked.
“Guess.” Su Ye gave the same reply to both of them.
The two of them turned around to look at Su Ye at the same time. Both of them rolled their eyes.
Finally, Su Ye saw that Palos was also glaring at him. She then buried her head in her book.
“She seems childish…” Su Ye thought.
2
Both Rolon and Ebert seemed not to care about this matter. They did not bother Su Ye.
Sometime later, Niedern announced the class’s dismissal and walked toward the door.
Hort told Su Ye, “I am going to practice my battle techniques. See you tomorrow.”
“I’ll continue practicing my long-distance running, goodbye!” Jimmy said as he left the classroom together with Hort.
Su Ye was frustrated when he heard Jimmy’s words. You are a mage, why are you practicing long-distance running every day?
1
Jimmy was the class’s long-distance running champion last year. Even the warriors in the class could not compete against him.
Su Ye looked at his four other deskmates.
The noble Rolon, who was unwilling to interact with others, was his usual self. Dressed in black leather armor, he stuffed his spellbook into his belt and grabbed his battle spear and longsword as he walked out of the class.
It seemed as though he was entering the battlefield every day.
Palos and Laker were looking at their spellbooks, engrossed in their study.
Su Ye then glanced at Ebert. He was scrawny and tiny and had a worried look every day. He was sitting there worrying about something and sighed from time to time.
“I’ll go practice my sculpting.” Ebert carried his spellbook and hobbled out the classroom after he spoke. He seemed as though he were an opium addict whose waist could be snapped with a gust of wind.
Su Ye knew why Ebert messed around with sculptures. Ebert’s ambition was to become a Puppeteer, and sculpting was one of the required abilities of a Puppeteer. He wanted to become like the King of Puppets, Pygmalion, and create puppets that were identical to humans. However, Pygmalion’s greatest work was his wife, while Ebert wanted a man.
Su Ye could not understand these people who played with hobby kits.
Even though he was quite envious of Pygmalion.
Su Ye then looked at Palos. He felt a little bad for her as she was so young but could not speak.
Su Ye once again recounted his six deskmates. Hort, his friend and a second-year despite being in the academy for six years. Jimmy, talented in magic but practices long-distance running every day. Rolon, a noble who always carries around a spear and a sword. Ebert, a hobby kit expert who might not be able to lift a sculpting hammer. A beautiful young lady who can’t speak, and finally…
His gaze finally landed onto Laker. Of his six deskmates, Laker seemed to be the most normal.
