Chapter 42. Their Scandal Was Published on the Newspaper
Su Ruoqing knew she couldn’t force Mingzhe to let her go, so she stopped struggling and said, “Mingzhe, let go of me first. I am almost suffocated by your tight embrace.”
Since Su Ruoqing had softened her tone, Mingzhe decided to listen to her. However, before loosening his grip on her, he added, “Ruoqing, as long as you promise to come out with me occasionally, I’ll let go of you.”
Su Ruoqing decided to agree to his request for the time being, but she heard him say, “Ruoqing, don’t you even think about lying to me, or I’ll tell others what happened between us.”
“Nice try. But do you think you can threaten me by saying this? Leng Yuhe won’t believe your nonsense.” Even though Su Ruoqing said so, she wasn’t sure whether Leng Yuhe would get angry or not, for she knew he was a moody man.
Mingzhe smiled. “I’m not just talking about General Leng. Do you think his family will believe in you like he does?”
Mingzhe indeed found her weakness. It was Governor Leng who agreed her to become Leng Yuhe’s fiancee. If he changed his mind…
“I promise you that I can come out with you when I am free. We’re friends after all.” Su Ruoqing knew Mingzhe was up to no good, but she could only made a promise to him at this moment. After all, she was Leng Yuhe’s fiancee, and Mingzhe wouldn’t go too far.
Since Mingzhe got the answer he wanted, he finally let go of Su Ruoqing. When recalling her fragrant and soft body, he became a little sullen.
“It seems that we have nothing to talk about today. I’ll leave first.”
Afraid that Mingzhe would do something more, Su Ruoqing left without looking back.
In the following days, Mingzhe went to look for Su Ruoqing every day. If it was impossible to avoid meeting him, she would stay with him for a while and persuade him to give up on her. However, Mingzhe always tuned a deaf ear to her persuasion.
Their meeting gave Su Zhiyou a great opportunity. Although Su Ruoqing and Mingzhe didn’t meet very often, she would take a lot of photos each time. Some photos were taken from special angles, in which Su Ruoqing and Mingzhe looked very intimate, as if they were a real couple.
These photos were what Su Zhiyou wanted most. Since she couldn’t kill Su Ruoqing, she would deprive her of something more precious, such as fame and status.
“Mingzhu, do you know why your brother always comes to me recently?” Su Ruoqing was a little distressed. She knew Mingzhe harboured ill intentions, but she didn’t know his ultimate purpose. Therefore, she was at a loss as to what to do next.
“I think my brother has fallen in love with you again. Perhaps I can persuade him to stop harassing you.” Mingzhu did not understand their complicated relationship. She just wanted to help Su Ruoqing without hurting her brother.
Since Mingzhu was an unsophisticated girl, Su Ruoqing knew she couldn’t count on her this time. So she decided not to prevent Mingzhe from visiting her every day. In this way, she wanted to know his real intention.
The next morning, after waking up, Su Ruoqing went downstairs to eat breakfast as usual, but all the servants looked at her in a strange way. Su Ruoqing was puzzled and she looked herself in the mirror, but she found there was nothing wrong with her appearance.
Then the housekeeper came over to show her the newspaper. “Madam, something bad happened.”
After taking the newspaper, Su Ruoqing saw an article entitled “Leng Yuhe’s Fiancee, Su Ruoqing Was Caught in the Middle of an Affair.” Every word was printed in bold.
Su Ruoqing was shocked and continued to read the article, only to find that there were photos of her and Mingzhe together. In some photos, they looked so intimate, and with the detailed description, even Su Ruoqing herself had an illusion that she cheated on Leng Yuhe.
“Madam, it’s not just this newspaper that published your photos and information. Almost all mainstream media posted the same news.”
The housekeeper’s words illuminated Su Ruoqing. “Since all the mainstream media published the news, it’s definitely not a coincidence. Someone must be…”
It was still too early to name the culprit, so Su Ruoqing was not going to tell anyone about her guess.
She said to the housekeeper, “I have to trouble you this time. Would you please help me contain the spread of this news? Otherwise, it will ruin General Leng’s fame…”
The housekeeper was very amiable at ordinary times, but he now pulled a long face. Su Ruoqing couldn’t help feeling guilty. Although this was not her fault, she had brought shame on the Leng family.
“Even if you don’t ask me for help, I will definitely do these things. But…”
The housekeeper didn’t finish his words. Su Ruoqing knew he didn’t believe her, but it was hard to convince him. She could only investigate the whole thing to prove her innocence. After pondering for a while, she thought it was better to start the investigation from Mingzhe.
Since the matter had already been out of control, it was useless to cover it up, so Su Ruoqing directly went to the Ming’s villa.
“Ruoqing, I didn’t expect you to come here. It’s so good to see you.”
Mingzhe reached out to hold Su Ruoqing’s hand, but she dodged his touch. “I have something to discuss with you.”
“Then come in and have a chat with me.”
“No need. If I enter your house today, there will be more nonsense in those newspapers tomorrow. In that case, I will never be able to prove my innocence.”
The smile on Mingzhe’s face froze. “Ruoqing, what are you talking about? I don’t understand.”
“Drop the act! You can afford newspapers, can’t you?” Su Ruoqing didn’t want to waste any time with him. “Tell me. Was it you who did all this?”
Hearing Su Ruoqing’s blunt question, Mingzhe was a little embarrassed.
“I admit that I’ve read the article in the newspaper, but I didn’t do anything.”
“How can I believe you? You just want everyone to misunderstand my relationship with you, right?” Looking at Mingzhe’s gloating look, Su Ruoqing was more certain that this matter had something to do with him.
“No wonder you pester me every day and try every means to meet me. Your purpose is to take some photos and publish them in the newspaper, right?”
Mingzhu thought Su Ruoqing was particularly cute when she was angry. She always treated him with an indifferent attitude before.
“Ruoqing, I didn’t do any of these things. Leng Yuhe has taught me a lesson, so I don’t dare to frame you again. Besides, this kind of thing is stupid. I will never do it.”
Seeing that Su Ruoqing just kept silent, Mingzhe continued to explain, “Instead of suspecting me, you might as well think about who holds a grudge against you. After all, this person’s purpose is to ruin your reputation. What’s your opinion?”
After thinking it over, Su Ruoqing felt his words made sense. Leng Yuhe had put great pressure on the Ming family, and they wouldn’t forget the severe consequences. Su Ruoqing believed that Mingzhe did not dare to publicly challenge the Leng family. But if it wasn’t him, who would it be?
At this moment, the familiar face that Mingzhe saw on the street that day suddenly flashed through his mind. Although Su Zhiyou covered most of her face with a mask, he could still recognize her at first glance. Could it be possible that Su Zhiyou had something to do with this matter?
The more he thought about it, the more he was convinced that this was possible. “Ruoqing, I think I might know the culprit’s identity. But I need some time to investigate the whole thing. If you still have trust in me, please wait for a few days, okay?”
Although Su Ruoqing didn’t completely believe in Mingzhe, she thought it would be better if someone helped with her investigation. After thinking for a while, Su Ruoqing agreed.
Su Zhiyou, who was hiding in the distance, wore a smug expression while holding the camera. “You two are really bold enough to meet each other now.”
…
On the battlefield, the morale of Leng Yuhe’s soldiers was low. What’s worse, their fighting force had decreased a lot. Unexpectedly, they were attacked by Shen Nan’s troops at night. Under the bright moonlight, the battlefield was under heavy artillery fire.
“General, the enemies launched a surprise attack and they will soon come to our barracks.”
“General, the number of enemies is large, and they carry many heavy weapons.”
“General…”
Although Leng Yuhe was worried about Su Ruoqing, he couldn’t risk the lives of his soldiers.
The fighting power of Leng Yuhe’s army was far inferior than before. Leng Yuhe kicked the body at his feet and looked around. On his left, a soldier was shot in the right arm. However, with a ferocious look, he was still fighting the enemies by using his clumsy left hand. On his right, a soldier with bloodshot eyes was shouting loudly, and blood oozed from the corner of his mouth.
Picking up the machine gun beside him, Leng Yuhe tried his best to fight against the enemies.
The enemies fell in pools of blood one by one. Leng Yuhe’s army won the battle, and all the soldiers were cheering happily, but the dangers they just encountered on the battlefield still haunted everyone.
Leng Yuhe finally lost all of his strength. Out of exhaustion, he got down on one knee. An enemy on the ground trembled and pulled the trigger at him. Leng Yuhe was suddenly thrown to the ground by someone, and he finally fainted after the sound of gunfire.
After waking up in the reconstructed camp, Leng Yuhe watched the warm sunshine coming in from the window. He suddenly had an illusion that everything was unreal.
“General, you’re finally awake.” The soldiers had waited anxiously for a long time and they were overjoyed when seeing Leng Yuhe open his eyes.
“General, if you hadn’t been brave and invincible to help us defeat the enemies, we might be in a critical situation right now.”
“General, the military doctor has already checked your physical condition. There are many injuries on your body, but they are skin trauma. The wounds will heal after a period of recuperation.”
…
The soldiers were talking to him at the same time, and Leng Yuhe was a bit annoyed.
“I’m already fine. You can go out first. Call in Adjutant Xu, for I have something to ask him.” Looking around the room, he didn’t see Adjutant Xu. Leng Yuhe wanted to ask him about the specific situation of the war.
But the soldiers in front of him fell into silence. They didn’t say a word for a long time.
“What’s wrong? Are you all dumb?”
At this moment, Bai Chongxiu suddenly came in and said, “Don’t make things difficult for them. I’m afraid that Adjutant Xu won’t be able to come.”
He gave the soldiers a look to let them out, but they didn’t dare to leave until Leng Yuhe nodded. Bai Chongxiu was slightly enraged, but he didn’t show his emotion.
“Adjutant Xu died.” Bai Chongxiu said indifferently, “Maybe you don’t remember. He died to save you.”
After hearing what he said, Leng Yuhe began to recall the scene on the battlefield. It seemed that someone had taken a shot for him, and it should be Adjutant Xu.
Leng Yuhe sighed slightly. Adjutant Xu had been with him for many years, and he was sad to hear about his death.
Bai Chongxiu shook his head as he looked at Leng Yuhe. “You don’t have to be so sad. Sacrificing for you might be the best outcome for him.”
