Chapter 498: Chapter 498: Slaying the Demon Overlord
This spell is akin to a free, enhanced version of Frost Nova; its damage is average but its control power is extreme. It can directly freeze a target for three to twelve seconds. The stronger the target, the faster they can break the ice, but even the weakest shall remain frozen for at least three seconds.
On the outskirts of the battlefield, the Demon Overlord locked in battle with Mars was hit by the spell’s residual effects and froze solid. Mars seized the chance to pounce, clawing and biting, with damages of tens of thousands popping up continuously.
However, Lin Xiao did not exploit this opportunity to command his subordinates to swarm the opponent. The main reason was that they wouldn’t be able to kill him in just a few seconds, and if they failed to do so, they would be breaking the rules of one-on-one combat, prompting the Demon Overlord to command his own troops to swarm in retaliation.
While the Demon Overlord couldn’t be killed immediately, the situation was different for the other demons. Lin Xiao’s gaze shifted toward the far-off Demon Magicians and Wizard Group, more troublesome to deal with compared to the stronger Demon Centurions.
With his command, Mars 2 shouldered its way through two frozen Demon Centurions and leapt into the midst of the Demon Wizard Group. With a powerful jump of over ten meters, it pounced down with a ‘boom’, pinning a frozen Demon Wizard and biting its head off in one gulp, a staggering five thousand damages sprang up, followed by a series of thousands of damages as its sharp teeth tore into the flesh.
The Demon Wizard managed to hold on for less than two seconds before its over one hundred thousand health points were completely depleted, dead on the spot.
In the distance, Hills and Starfire were not to be outdone. Hills pulled out an arrow from behind, and with a wave from gifted hands, Holy Light blessed the arrowhead, transforming it into spears of radiant light.
“Bang Bang Bang!”
The bowstring thrummed repeatedly, and instantly a succession of light arrows cascaded across a hundred yards, striking the same Demon Magician—each dealing damages close to twenty thousand. After six arrows, the Demon Magician was instantaneously slain.
And then, pulling out a heavy armor-piercing arrow, Hills nocked it onto the bowstring and shot another Demon Wizard, continuing to rapidly fire off consecutive shots.
These were just ordinary attacks, but with a shooting speed so fast that an arrow was loosed every half a second, culminating in another Demon Magician killed within a mere five seconds.
On the other side, the Ice Magic user Starfire didn’t have time to cast the powerful Ice God’s Spear, but ordinary ice spells in his hands were just as deadly. Ice spears coupled with Frostbolt and a two-meter-long icicle crashing down from the sky were enough to eliminate a Demon Wizard caught in deep freeze.
After a round of explosive combat, only eight out of seventeen Demon Magicians and Demon Wizards survived. Especially the key Wizards, most were killed, unable to muster enough numbers to hold back Starfire.
The heavy casualties of his subordinates did not dampen the spirits of the Demon Overlord; he continued to suppress his formidable opponent.
Indeed, suppress. Although Mars was strong, he was ultimately five levels lower than the Demon Overlord. At this level, a five-level gap was significant. Amongst the demon forces, a five-level deficit was insurmountable. If not for the Supreme Naga’s exceptionally powerful talent, with high damage mitigation and resistances, any other properly forged leadership template minion gained through a purple Demon Mark would have been overwhelmed by the Demon Overlord without a chance to fight back.
Mars’s tenacity incited both wrath and excitement in the Demon Overlord, reminiscent of a chess game. It was rare to meet an opponent whose strength was slightly lower than one’s own, to fight a tough yet thrilling battle and to win by a narrow margin. The exhilarating sensation of such a victory was beyond the imagination of most.
Thus, uninterrupted and fully engrossed in this clash, the Demon Overlord focused on subduing his resilient enemy, time and again narrowly overpowering him in hard-fought struggles. His fighting spirit surged, his vigor intensified, completely unaware that the tide of the entire battlefield was gradually turning.
With Starfire’s hands freed, he fully displayed the impact a full-force Magic based BOSS could have on the battle. Wave after wave of super wide-area Blizzard spells raged without pause, claiming the lives of demons every second. However, the demons’ counterattacks were also formidable, with casualties among the ranks, including elites.
The intense combat reached its halfway point when several Demon Centurions called out to the Demon Overlord, finally bringing him to his senses. He did not abandon the satisfying battle; instead, he commanded his Centurion subordinates to continue the offensive while sending a Messenger back to the Demon Camp, presumably to call up the remaining forces.
Ever vigilant, Lin Xiao immediately turned to his girlfriend and said:
“You take command of the battle.”
He summoned his mount and rode off, calling an elite Knight to his side. They skirted around the edge of the battlefield, and using the mount’s Speed advantage, intercepted the Messenger a kilometer away. A Level 70 elite Demon, struck by a Lightning Strike from afar and pulled into combat, stunned.
A Level 70 Mage taking on a Level 70 elite Demon would have been a challenge, but it was a different story with an equally elite Knight as a meat shield.
The Knight engaged the demon while he cast spells from a distance. When the demon approached, he fled, with his Knight entangling the foe. If the demon, exasperated, stopped in its tracks, he also stopped to cast spells. Employing this shameless tactic, they killed the demon and recovered a letter calling for help from its body.
After intercepting the Messenger, they immediately returned.
Without reinforcements, the battle was essentially decided. By the time the demons realized the Messenger hadn’t arrived and sent others, it would be too late.
What followed was a brutal final battle. Despite heavy losses among his subordinates, Lin Xiao was determined to end the fight quickly.
One after another, my subordinates died in battle, each elite warrior and elite demon fought until both sides suffered heavy injuries. Even with the clerics and Star Month’s healing from behind, each of them had to face several enemies. The fact that they could hold on at all was already a credit to the clerics.
In the seventeenth minute of the entire encounter, the last normal Demon died, and more than seventy percent of Lin Xiao’s normal warriors had also fallen.
In the twenty-eighth minute of the encounter, all the Demon Magicians and Demon Wizards were annihilated, the elite Demons had mostly perished, and even a Centurion among the Demons had fallen in battle. Of Lin Xiao’s sixty-plus elite warriors, forty-one had died, including Mages and Priests.
At this point, less than twenty Demons remained alive on the battlefield, each one heavily wounded and not even at half health—all were in yellow or even red health—while out of Lin Xiao’s nearly four hundred subordinates, only just over a hundred remained alive. However, thanks to the clerics’ healing, most of them were in green health status.
The losses were tremendous, but he had won, and the surviving warriors had each accumulated a wealth of experience, leveling up at least one rank, with some of the lower-leveled ones rising by more than two.
Lin Xiao looked at the surrounded Demons with a smile, feeling greatly pleased, as he seemed to already foresee the rich rewards after slaughtering all the Demons and taking down the Demon Camp.
Just then, a roar that made one’s eardrums throb suddenly came from another direction, followed by a strong surge of wrathful intent. He quickly turned his head, only to see that, at some point, the battle with the Demon Overlord had carried on hundreds of meters away and was now in a Berserk state, transformed into an eight-meter-tall Flame Demon, its entire body engulfed in raging blood flames. The flaming greatsword cleaved a huge wound on Mars, flinging him away, with blood flames burning indestructibly within the wound.
Usually after Berserk, one would be weakened, let alone this sort of super move like Super Berserk. Previously, the Demon Overlord had not used it, believing he could suppress Mars, but now, suddenly realizing that most of his minions were about to die, he had finally reacted.
“Danger!”
Lin Xiao hastily shouted to the cleric Star Month:
“Hurry and rescue him.”
But the distance was too far. Star Month quickly closed in that direction, and just as she left the protection of the team, Lin Xiao saw the Demon Overlord abruptly raise his head, the pupils filled with raging flames shooting up, causing Lin Xiao’s heart to sink as he stretched out his hand and yelled:
“Don’t go over there!”
Before his words finished, the Demon Overlord lifted its huge flaming sword and disappeared in an instant, reappearing out of thin air in front of Star Month and bringing the blade down.
Star Month reacted swiftly as a shield of light materialized. With a ‘bang’, she was knocked back more than twenty meters.
The Demon Overlord, taking advantage of the moment, leaped thirty meters high like a blood flame meteorite and slashed down at Star Month. Lin Xiao quickly pointed his finger and a Lightning Strike exploded above the head of the Demon Overlord, but it was resisted, much to his astonishment.
The burning blood flame meteorite fell, striking where Star Month was, the surging blood flames exploding like a flood. A super high damage of one hundred and fifty thousand burst forth, followed by a series of tens of thousands of damage.
Witnessing a massive figure within the blood flame flood wielding its sword ferociously for the killing strike, Mars, who had been injured earlier, suddenly got up. Charging through the dozens of meters, he barged into the blood flame flood, knocking the figure askew. Then, in an instant, Starfire appeared nearby, an Ice Ring exploding and freezing the Demon Overlord. Mars took the opportunity to grab the blood flame-engulfed Star Month and threw her forcefully back, as Lin Xiao stepped forward to catch her. A cleric swiftly approached and cast Purification Spell, but the blood flames could not be dispelled.
Fortunately, Star Month swiftly regained consciousness and used Purification to dispel the blood flames on herself, then placed a Heal over herself, rapidly healing, and her health began to rise.
With Starfire, the most suppressive force against the Demons, out of combat, the remaining Demons saw an opportunity and launched their final counterattack. Lin Xiao simply ordered his subordinates to hold on at any cost. Instead of letting Starfire provide support again, he joined Hills in the battle to surround and attack the Demon Overlord.
With the treatment from Star Month, Mars rapidly suppressed his injuries and soon fought energetically against the Demon Overlord once again.
This time, it was no longer a fair duel but a joint assault by three Leaders. Even though the Demon Overlord’s strength burst forth enough to pressure Mars, the combined assault from three Leaders left him struggling to cope, especially the various strong controls from the Ice Magic irked him to no end, yet there was nothing he could do.
The duel with Mars, which had lasted almost half an hour, did not yield a victory or death; however, in just five minutes of being ambushed, the Demon Overlord found himself in a desperate situation. Unable to even bring about mutual destruction, he was ultimately shot and killed by an arrow from Hills, charged with all his strength.
The moment the Demon Overlord died, Mars and Hills both leveled up.
With the Overlord dead, the remaining Demons lost their will to fight and began to flee. Lin Xiao, intent on capturing as many as possible, ordered his subordinates to pursue and kill. Contrary to his expectations, Starfire and the others soon returned, bringing back the bodies of all Demons—none had escaped.
What followed was the exciting task of scavenging the battlefield, with the body of the Demon Overlord being the most thrilling find for him. Such a powerful foe having yielded loot that projected a column of light more than ten meters high truly was an exhilarating prospect.
Upon opening the body, three purple and a series of blue rewards instantly caught his eye.
