Chapter 46: Long-lost Sweetness

For the moment, neither of them spoke. Zhishu He was very tired after a whole day’s travelling, feeling ache penetrating through the bone. With his eyebrows knitted slightly, he leaned his forehead against the window.
Ziyu Ai casted a few glances at Zhishu He; Ziyu slowed down and freed his hand to touch Zhishu He’s forehead lightly. As expected, Zhishu had a fever again.
“Are you cold?” Ziyu Ai pulled the coat over, covered it on Zhishu He and said, “Hang in there. We’ll arrive in five odd hours. I’ll get off the viaduct later. There will be some commonly used medicine to replace what you usually use even in a small city.” Ziyu Ai did not blame Zhishu He for his haste to go outside without medicine. He knew that Zhishu He was painful enough, and it was easy to be impulsive when he could not hold on.
“What’s the time?” Zhishu He’s face was pale and his voice was weak.
Ziyu Ai read the time on the dashboard, “Eleven fifty-nine.”
At this moment, fireworks bloomed in the distant sky. On the long and monotonous highway, it was really refreshing to see such a scenery. That was supposed to be set off by people in the small city near the highway. With different colors blazing in clusters here and there, the sky was lightened.
“It’s twelve.” Zhishu He leaned forward slightly, looking at the fireworks carefully like a kid, with some innocent joy between his eyes and brows.
Ziyu Ai felt more relaxed too, and he smiled, “Happy Chinese New Year.”
Suddenly, something seemingly occurred to Ziyu Ai that he searched the storage box of the car while driving; and about two minutes later, he got what he was looking for.
A box of fujiya toffees.
“Hurry up! Eat a piece of candy at the beginning of the New Year, and you will taste sweetness and everything will go smooth all year round.”
Zhishu He took the candy box, thanked Doctor Ai in a daze. He was not aware that his eyes had been red. Zhishu He had already forgotten when he ate a candy last time. He even did not remember sweetness very well since being used to bitterness.
It was good to have someone care about you. He coaxed you mildly, with a small tin box filled with toffees like you were a kid—“Be a lamb, so that the day will be as sweet as sugar.”
Zhishu He opened the box and poured the candies all over his lap. He waved the empty box before Ziyu Ai’s eyes and asked, “Give it to me, won’t you?”
Ziyu Ai had even been ready to give Zhishu his melted heart as a present, let alone a tin box. The moment he promised Zhishu He, he felt slightly sorrowful and regretful. He wanted to pamper and dote Zhishu He so much in the coming days and made up for the past days no matter how mischievous or capricious He was. Nevertheless, the dream was difficult to realize. At least now, Zhishu He was still making a polite request to him for a humble thing.
But the mood of Zhishu He was visibly better than before. Although he seemed still languid due to the fever, his eyes had been clearer and brighter. He looked at Doctor, who was still driving. Then he tore off the wrapper of a candy and passed it over, “Have a candy.”
Ziyu Ai had a sweet tooth, or there would not be candies in the car. In addition, it was the one he loved fed him personally. So he absolutely accepted it. When Ziyu Ai saw He’s slender fingers stop beside his lips, it took him a lot of effort to resist taking a bite by the chance of eating the candy.
The second candy Zhishu He took was for the dog. Taking the car for a long time, Er Gou also looked tired. Er Gou chewed and then swallowed it soon after Zhishu He put the candy into its mouth.
The third one, for Zhishu He himself, tasted sweet, and it was so sweet that tears hovering in He’s eyes almost dropped.
When Ziyu Ai looked at Zhishu He, he had already fallen asleep again. But this time, he did not habitually had his brows frowned. Smile could also be read from the soft curve of his lips. It was so clean.
