Chapter 68: Chapter 53: First Battle Victory
Yan Fei was taken aback by the sudden appearance of the fighter jet. He then saw the jet dive toward him, a tail flame suddenly emerging from its belly, and a streak of fire coming straight at him. He immediately realized that the fighter jet had launched a missile attack on him.
All this time, it had been Yan Fei who controlled drones to launch missile attacks on others. He never thought the tables would turn and that he would face this situation himself. The incoming missile was incredibly fast. Even though it flew in a circle in the air, it was locked firmly on Yan Fei and rushed toward his direction at high speed.
Yan Fei knew the power of missiles. Although he was strong, he was frighteningly weak in the face of a missile attack and unable to withstand it. He quickly surveyed his surroundings and resolutely let the blonde woman go; he then leaned back and jumped off the large tree, plummeting headfirst toward the ground below at great speed.
The missile flew past the big tree above, and as expected, did not attack the blonde woman standing there. Instead, it chased after Yan Fei, who was descending rapidly—it was about to catch up with him.
At that moment, Yan Fei quickly passed through a large tree growing on the cliff below. Although he was scratched all over by the branches, he managed to get through the tree and continued to fall downwards.
The missile, chasing Yan Fei and too close to avoid the large tree, struck the branches and exploded, completely destroying the large tree with the tremendous force of the blast. The impact then spread downward, hitting Yan Fei and making him fall even faster.
Yan Fei swiftly assessed the environment and, through precise calculation, used the large tree to block the missile attack, narrowly escaping disaster. However, Yan Fei was still in a very difficult situation, remaining in danger.
Seeing the first missile evaded by Yan Fei, the fighter jet launched another missile. This missile flew toward Yan Fei and seemed to be on the verge of hitting him. As he continued to fall rapidly, his speed increasing, Yan Fei suddenly somersaulted and grabbed a nearby vine, swinging away. The missile, unable to dodge in time, hit the nearby cliffside and exploded, creating a large hole in it.
As the vine swung back, Yan Fei released his grip and jumped into the hole just created by the missile. This hole didn’t exist before; it was made by the missile explosion and now conveniently provided Yan Fei a place to hide.
Yan Fei had just made out his attacker: the fighter jet was the very familiar F-16, painted with the United States Air Force insignia, indicating it belonged to the US Air Force. He had no quarrel with the US Army, so why were they attacking him? Could it be that the blonde woman was associated with the US Army and she had called in the F-16 fighter?
The US Air Force F-16, having failed to hit Yan Fei with two missiles, was preparing to fire again. But Yan Fei cleverly hid in the cave, out of the F-16’s reach. The cave was pitch dark and seemingly vast; randomly firing missiles wouldn’t necessarily harm Yan Fei and would only waste the F-16’s ammunition.
So, Yan Fei hid in the cave, observing the situation outside. He saw the US Air Force F-16 circling, not launching any more missiles. Five minutes later, loud roars rang out again as three mammoth Chinook transport helicopters appeared atop the mountain and moved toward the blonde woman’s location, hovering above her.
The doors of the Chinook transport helicopters swung open, and ropes were lowered. Fully armed US military soldiers began fast-roping down. Soon after, over a hundred soldiers from the three Chinooks had all landed.
This US Army unit swiftly assembled, then located the blonde woman in the tree. The American commander saluted her respectfully, and she returned the gesture, before they exchanged a few words.
They appeared to have some disagreements, but finally, the commander complied with the blonde woman’s wishes. He signaled his troops, who then spread out and began scouring the slope below. It seemed they aimed to find Yan Fei, either to kill him or capture him. Meanwhile, the Chinook transport helicopters did not land but continued to hover overhead without leaving.
Suddenly, Yan Fei’s situation worsened dramatically. An F-16 from the US Air Force was circling in the sky; if he showed his face, he’d be under missile fire. On the ground, a large US Army force had arrived; these military soldiers, heavily armed, started searching for Yan Fei. Should they find him, it was certain they would attack.
Although Yan Fei was formidable, he couldn’t disregard attacks from firearms. So if the US military soldiers found Yan Fei, he would be in big trouble.
What angered Yan Fei the most was that the blonde woman, having gained a breather, began to heal from her wounds and once again joined the search for him. With her present, many of Yan Fei’s tactics would fail.
Yan Fei was hidden within the cave, which had been carved out by an F-16 missile. Although the interior space was vast and pitch-black, with depths unseen, he could vaguely discern that there were many other caverns inside. It seemed this had been a natural cave all along, only undiscovered due to a thin layer of rock, now exposed to daylight thanks to the missile’s blast.
The present circumstances were unfavorable for Yan Fei, constantly putting his life at risk. Although his instinct was to escape through these caves, whose destinations were unknown, a determined expression crossed his face, and he did not choose to flee through the caverns.
Yan Fei took off the backpack he was carrying and gently set the little chimpanzee on the ground. The chimp had been incredibly lucky, as it was unharmed despite the hectic escape through the woods. Only the rapid descent had frightened it.
Yan Fei opened Universal Space and took out some food, which he placed in front of the chimpanzee. He unwrapped the food and said, “Little chimpanzee, I’m really sorry that your parents were killed. I should have taken care of you, but I still have very important things to do right now, so I can only leave you here for the time being, as this is the safest place for now. If everything goes well, I will come back to find you after I finish my tasks.”
The chimpanzee looked at Yan Fei, then at the pile of food on the ground, uttering yi yi ya ya noises, but sadly Yan Fei couldn’t understand animal language and didn’t know what it was trying to say. He could only pat the chimpanzee’s head to comfort it and then prepared to leave the cave.
The F-16 fighters were still patrolling the sky, and the US Army forces on the ground were about to approach the cave where Yan Fei was. At that moment, another F-16 fighter suddenly appeared in the sky. The two fighter jets joined up to form a two-plane formation, providing air support for the US military soldiers’ operation below.
Two minutes later, a peculiar-looking airplane suddenly appeared at a distant mountaintop. Although the airplane was flying close to the mountaintop, it was immediately detected by the radar of the US Army’s F-16 fighter, and then the pilot of the fighter jet also spotted the strange airplane with the naked eye.
The pilot of the fighter jet that had launched the attack spoke over the communication channel, “Carl, do you see the plane ahead?”
Carl, the pilot in the following F-16 fighter, replied, “Jerry, I see it. It looks very much like our ‘Predator Drone,’ but why isn’t there any paint on it?”
The previous pilot, Jerry, said, “This is basically a Predator Drone! Who knows why it doesn’t have any paint? Maybe it’s one of our Special Forces executing a special mission here. They probably don’t want to reveal their identities in order to keep it a secret.”
Carl retorted, “As long as you’re not blind, you can tell it’s ours from the shape. They still want to conceal their identity? That’s really hiding one’s head and exposing one’s tail.”
Jerry said, “Let’s not worry about it. Let’s complete our task for today and report this to our superiors after we get back. Let them decide what to do.”
As the two pilots were casually chatting, they saw the “Predator Drone” rapidly approaching them. Very quickly, the Predator Drone closed the distance between itself and the F-16 leading by Jerry to just two kilometers.
Jerry became suspicious and immediately tried to contact the other party via the military channel, but there was no response at all. Jerry and Carl started to feel uneasy, and then saw the drone’s belly flash with fire, unexpectedly launching two air-to-air missiles, each targeting one of the F-16 fighters.
As the piercing alarm from the onboard radar sounded, Jerry and Carl were taken aback and instinctively performed evasive maneuvers.
At this critical moment, Yan Fei’s Drone Avatar finally arrived. Its “Predator Drone” appearance successfully deceived the US Army pilots, and under their complacency, it advanced close to them and launched a missile attack on the two F-16 fighters.
Guided by Quantum Radar, the two air-to-air missiles attacked the F-16 fighters. While the F-16s were trying to evade and deploy decoy flares to distract the missiles, they didn’t expect that the drone was equipped with what could be called ‘black technology’ Quantum Radar. The decoy flares failed to function under the radar’s lock, and the missiles bypassed the flares’ temptation, streaking towards their true targets.
The missiles launched by the drone were AIM-92s, which are the air-launched models of the notorious Stinger missiles. They have a maximum flight speed of Mach 2.2, with a maximum attack range of 10 kilometers.
Jerry’s fighter jet was less than two kilometers away from the drone and, at such a short distance, he couldn’t accelerate his fighter to its maximum speed of 2.5 Mach. Therefore, he was unable to evade the AIM-92 missile attack that reached a top speed of 2.2 Mach.
The AIM-92 missile breached the decoy flares’ deception and flew toward its true target. A flash of fire burst in the sky as Jerry’s F-16 was hit by the missile, exploding mid-air. In shock, Jerry didn’t even have time to eject before he and his F-16 were obliterated.
