Chapter 41 The Only Way You Can Get to Him is Through Me
Xia Feng’s awkwardness wasn’t resolved until Yu Dong appeared with a dish in her hands.
When the food was all placed down, everyone gravitated towards the dinner table.
“As soon as mom heard that you were coming back, half of the planned dishes turned into your favorites.” Yu Song pointed to a few dishes.
“The other half is food you hate eating.” Mother Yu gave her son a dirty look.
“Thank you, mom!” It had been a long time since Yu Dong tasted her mother’s cooking. She had wanted to eat them in her previous life, but back then she was always getting lectured during dinner, so she never had the appetite.
Father Yu had a slight addiction to alcohol. Every time dinner was served, he would always open a small bottle of wine and drink two mouthfuls. Today was no exception. Just as he placed a bottle on the table, it was taken away.
When Father Yu looked up, he saw Xia Feng’s pleasant smile: “Uncle, let me pour you some.”
After serving Father Yu, Xia Feng placed the bottle down. Noticing this, Father Yu silently looked at Xia Feng’s empty glass.
Xia Feng followed Father Yu’s gaze to his glass and was somewhat embarrassed as he said: “Uncle, I don’t drink much.”
“Hn.” Father Yu didn’t insist as he picked his own glass and took a healthy swig.
Xia Feng heard the cold hum and was immediately worried, was father-in-law unsatisfied with him?
After a few seconds of hesitation, Xia Feng picked up the bottle of wine and poured himself a glass. Standing up, he said: “Uncle, I’d like to pay my respects.”
Father Yu’s eyes showed reluctance as Xia Feng downed his whole glass in one go.
With more than 40% alcohol, although it was a small cup, the strong and spicy taste twisted Xia Feng’s face. As embarrassed as he was, he desperately tried not to lose face as he stuffed himself with vegetables.
Although Yu Dong didn’t know the alcohol content of the wine, she knew doctors don’t often drink, so she knew Xia Feng wasn’t feeling well.
So she hurriedly scooped half a bowl of white bone soup and handed it to him.
Xia Feng gratefully accepted the bowl and drank two mouthfuls in a hurry.
“Dong Dong, it looks like your boyfriend can’t drink.” Watching the entire spectacle, Yu Song couldn’t help but gloat.
“Xia Feng is a surgeon, he usually doesn’t drink.” Yu Dong explained.
“A Surgeon? the one with a scalpel?” Yu Song was surprised.
Father Yu and Mother Yu looked at each other; the job seems OK.
“You don’t need to drink.” Father Yu said this when he saw Xia Feng’s red face. However, when he finished, Father Yu secretly thought that men who can’t drink really can’t be considered men.
Xia Feng naturally heard Father Yu’s unspoken words. This was Xia Feng’s first time meeting father-in-law, how can he not meet his expectations? He picked up the wine bottle and refilled Father Yu’s cup. “Uncle, although I don’t usually drink, I can at least accompany you for two cups. I won’t get drunk.”
At Father Yu’s raised eyebrow, Xia Feng filled his glass with an aching heart; his liver already felt busted.
So after two cups, the seemingly invincible Xia Feng was directly facedown on the dinner table.
“Xia Feng, Xia Feng.” Yu Dong shook his shoulder for a while, but Xia Feng didn’t move. She turned towards her dad and pouted: “Dad, why did you get Xia Feng to go all out with you?”
“What all out, I’ve only had three cups.” Father Yu felt wronged, he hadn’t even felt a buzz yet.
“Why are you blaming dad, Xia Feng’s the one with no tolerance.” Yu Song quipped from the side.
“Fine, just drop it. Help me carry him into a bed.” Yu Dong lifted an arm.
“Yu Song went to Xia Feng’s other side and helped her lift him. He suddenly paused and asked: “Which room?”
“Obviously my room.” Yu Dong said.
Mother Yu’s dialect slipped as she banged her chopsticks down and said: “Bring him to your room Yu Song. You come over here.”
Yu Dong opened her mouth to argue, but in the end, she knew she was done for. So she quietly sat back down. She forgot that she wasn’t in her previous life. Before her rebirth it was ten years in the future- her mother would be desperate enough to personally dump any man into Yu Dong’s bed. Now, even her boyfriend isn’t allowed to enter her room unless they want to be stabbed with a kitchen knife.
Yu Song smiled at her as he left, leaving a numb Yu Dong to fend for herself.
Yu Dong didn’t continue to eat. Instead, she sat on her hands on the wooden chair. Father Yu glanced at her as he took another drink. Yu Song came back at this time and looking at the two sides of the room, decided that he would go to his dad where it would be out of the splash zone.
Yu Dong used her best smile as she rubbed her head against Mother Yu’s shoulder. She tried to act cute: “Mom~”
“Stand up!” Mother Yu raised a finger.
Yu Dong blinked. Biting her lip, she stood up.
“Talk!” Mother Yu’s expression was like a judge eyeing a prisoner.
“About what?” Yu Dong was at a loss.
“Start by telling me all your excuses for stealing your account book and leaving home.” It didn’t have much, but Mother Yu still remembered the exact amount in that account.
Both father and son pricked up their ears.
“That…it was a spur-of-the-moment thing. Later, I thought about the fact that you hadn’t even seen my boyfriend, so I realized marrying him wasn’t very good.” Yu Dong continued, upping the flattery. “Fortunately I changed my mind. I broke up with him, and a few days later, I arrived in Shanghai.”
“That’s what I thought. How can marriage be so casual? We haven’t even met the other party’s parents, we don’t even know his character.” Mother Yu ruthlessly said.
On the surface, Yu Dong’s head was nodding like a chicken pecking its food, but inwardly she disagreed. Ten years later, as long as it was a man you’d agree and get us married within the hour.
“What about Xia Feng? How did that happen?” Mother Yu asked.
“Xia Feng…” Yu Dong certainly can’t let her mother find out that she was already married; otherwise, she wouldn’t even live to see the next New Year. “I…I like him.”
Yu Song fake vomited at the sight of his sister’s coquettish actions; he rubbed the goosebumps across his arms.
“Forget that- what I like is being able to eat.” Mother Yu started interrogating: “education, age, job, income, house, cars, and ah what kind of people are his parents, tell me right now.”
“Mom…” Looking towards her brother’s room, Yu Dong said, “Our house isn’t sound-proof, lower your voice.”
“So what, then let him just come out and tell me himself, ” Mother Yu continued, “Your brother often tells us about those recently graduated little girls who were easily deceived by people, Do you even know what and who to watch out for?”
“I think its other people who should be thankful I don’t deceive them.” Yu Dong couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Stop with your smiles,” Mother Yu knocked on the table and said, “Hurry up and tell me.”
“Male, 28-year-old surgeon, lives in Shanghai, has a house, a car, a deposit, and the most important fact: He really, really likes your daughter.” Yu Dong shamelessly said.
“Such good specs? Tell the truth, you were the one who threw herself at him, right?” After hearing such high-profile specs, Yu Song mercilessly refuted Yu Dong.
“Shut up and eat your food.” Yu Dong gave him a look.
Mother Yu and Father Yu looked at each other perturbed and hesitantly asked: “A doctor ah, and a surgeon at that, how did he even notice you?”
Yu Song couldn’t help but spray out the soup in his mouth.
Yu Dong knew that her mother’s blind adoration of anyone scholarly was affecting her judgment.
“So what if he’s a doctor. In Shanghai, every time you cross the street, you’ll meet a doctor.” Yu Dong boasted, “Anyway if it weren’t for his desperate attempts of pursuing me, I wouldn’t have even bothered glancing his way.”
At this moment, after his brief rest, a somewhat sober Xia Feng heard Yu Dong’s words and was stunned. After a while, he couldn’t help but cover his eyes as he tried not to smile.
“His posture was good.” Mother Yu thought back to Xia Feng’s appearance. “He’s tall too.”
“That’s right. I fell for his face.”
Xia Feng’s shoulders trembled as he struggled to curb his laughter.
“Does he really like you that much?” Looking at her daughter, Mother Yu found it hard to believe.
“He’s here, how can be faking.”
Mother Yu glanced at her husband and asked: “Father, what do you think?”
“I need to take another look. I was going to get him drunk and ask him then, but he fell at two cups.” Father Yu said with some pity.
“Dad!” This time, Yu Dong really was rendered speechless.
Xia Feng’s laughter abruptly stopped. He couldn’t help but think that out of all the people in this family, Father Yu was definitely the blackest.
…….
Everyone in the village usually got up early: The mother woke up early to cook, the father woke up early to circle his fields. Xia Feng woke up at 7:00 a.m., but he was still a little late when compared to his elders.
Xia Feng wanted to help with the chores, but Mother Yu didn’t let him do anything. In the end, Xia Feng had to sit alone at the yard, twiddling his thumbs.
At this time, Yu Song came out to stretch and noticed Xia Feng. Yu Song approached Xia Feng and said hello: “You’re up so early?”
“Yeah.” Xia Feng stood up to greet him.
“Can you wake up Dong Dong?” Mother Yu tilted her head out the kitchen door and shouted, “Go and tell her to work.”
“Un.” At this, Yu Song turned and went back into the house.
But Xia Feng stopped him and told Mother Yu: “Auntie, how about I help with the work instead? Yu Dong’s usually so drowsy in the mornings, let her sleep a little more.”
The courtyard was silent in an instant, with the only sound coming from the neighbor’s dog as it barked twice.
Xia Feng felt unsettled, why does he feel like something was wrong?
Mother Yu came out of the kitchen brandishing a spatula. She looked at Xia Feng and asked: “How do you know what she’s like early in the morning?”
“You’re not cohabiting already, are you?” Yu Song made an exaggerated expression as he gasped.
When Mother Yu heard this, her eyes burst with murderous intent and Xia Feng was immediately frightened of her fierce aura. He felt cold sweat covering his back, and he didn’t know how to answer.
Seeing that Xia Feng was slow to answer, Mother Yu felt that this reaction was a silent acquiescence. Ah, so that’s how it is? Mother Yu rushed to Yu Dong’s room with the spatula.
“This dead girl, just you wait.”
“Aunt, aunt, you’ve misunderstood!” Xia Feng quickly ran after her.
A dazed Yu Dongconfusedfused when her mother ripped off her blanket. Feeling a little cold, she curled up into a ball and went back to sleep.
“Don’t you dare!” Mother Yu pinched Yu Dong’s ear and dragged her out of her bed.
Xia Feng saw this and feeling the painful pinch, he rushed to save her.
“Mom, what are you doing? That hurts.” Yu Dong rubbed her red ear as she burrowed into Xia Feng’s embrace.
How can Mother Yu stand this intimate picture; she reached out and pulled Yu Dong away from Xia Feng’s arms. As a result, her pajamas were disheveled, exposing her neck.
Yu Dong’s neck that Xia Feng had been biting the day before was suddenly exposed to the public. Xia Feng instantly turned red and hastily helped Yu Dong fix her clothes.
This shocking and extremely impactful image caused Mother Yu to drop her spatula.
“Mom, mom, calm down!” Yu Song picked up the spatula and held his mother who was about to faint.
“Auntie, listen to me.” Xia Feng was innocent, he and his wife were merely expressing their love, how can he convey this to mother-in-law?
“What’s wrong?” Father Yu had just returned from the neighbor’s and saw that everyone was around Yu Dong’s room.
“Dad, Dong Dong and Xia Feng are living together and mom’s angry.” Yu Song explained perfunctorily.
Xia Feng’s heart was guilty as he looked at his father-in-law. Immediately, Father Yu’s eyes also turned murderous.
While Mother Yu had been ready to beat Yu Dong, Father Yu was ready to beat Xia Feng.
“Go get my hatchet from the yard.” Father Yu instructed Yu Song.
……
“The only way you can get to him is through me!” Yu Dong finally snapped out of her daze and as she scrambled to stand in front of Xia Feng.
At this, Mother Yu’s eyes rolled and she fainted.
Author has something to say: Recently, I feel like writing sadistic stories. Would you like my next story if it’s a little sadistic?
If I write my next story to be a little sadistic, would you like it?
Xia Feng tried so hard, he was so cute. He was literally the ditzy shoujo main character this whole chapter.
I feel like I never stopped laughing when I translated this chapter.
The title of this chapter was MTLed as ‘To Move Him, Move Me First.’ You wouldn’t believe how long I thought about what to translate it to. I thought about translating it as ‘Over My Dead Body’ but I didn’t think Yu Dong had to be any more dramatic than she already is.
