Chapter 7: Bai Jinli, Are You Capable Enough?

This company named Morning Star was a small, inconspicuous entertainment studio. The President was inept. He not only lacked ambition, he even engaged in nepotism and depended on corrupted relations. As a result, most of the people in the company’s board of directors had some connections with him.
Amongst them, the number of truly skilled professionals could easily be counted on a single hand. On the rare occasion that highly skilled people were employed, they did not stay for long. After all, what expert would willingly follow the biddings of imbeciles in power? Their incompetencies had caused the company to waste many golden chances. Just like when they signed Bai Jinli.
Bai Jinli may have been a good-for-nothing, but while she had no acting skills or any other talents, she at least had beauty. While success in the entertainment scene was not defined by appearance, it was a large factor. Indeed, it would be fallacious to claim that Bai Jinli would be able to do as she pleased by just being pretty. However, it was true that she would have had a lot more opportunities extended to her compared to her fellow artists, solely on account of her good looks.
Furthermore, Bai Jinli was not just any other beautiful woman. She was drop-dead gorgeous. Even if she was sent back to 20 years ago, during the so-called “Era of Goddesses”, she would be head and shoulders above the others.
As unfair as it may seem, God had chosen to open an extra door for Bai Jinli. Furthermore, God had not opened just any door. He opened a backdoor.
If Morning Star’s President had been just a little more clear-headed, he would not have blindly sold Bai Jinli for her beauty and body. He would not have focused on trading her for investments and resources. Instead, he would have focused on developing her as an artiste. He should have taken her a good script or two. He should have spent money on advertising her to the public. If he had done so, she would have long been an attractive artiste, loved by her fans and public alike. Not a B or C rate actress, caught up in scandals.
Of course, her current pathetic state was not entirely due to her company. It was a product of both the company’s incompetencies and her own idiocy and ego. All in all, they were equally to blame.
Standing at the foot of the company’s building, a heavy sigh escaped Jinli. The instant she looked up, she saw an exquisitely dressed woman storming murderously towards her. The clacking of the woman’s wine-red high heels ceased as she stopped in front of Jinli. That lady was Sister Qing. Sister Qing was a middle-aged woman in her forties, She was ever so elegant and ever so fashionable.
Jinli muttered in her heart, “She looks more like a star than I do…”
Sister Qing threw a short glance at Jinli and snorted coldly. She didn’t say much, just a simple, “Follow me.”
As much as she wanted to explode right there, they were ultimately at the entrance of the company. If she did so, they would be the top search by tomorrow, hitting the headlines:
# Tragic # A certain pretty face has lashed out in public #
# Revealed! Heart-wrenching truths behind the seemingly lavish lives of celebrities #
# Morning Star mistreating their artiste #
In order to preserve their own reputation, Sister Qing suppressed her erupting rage and took Jinli to her personal office.
Jinli vaguely remembered hearing a rumour about this manager of hers. She was said to be the President’s mother’s sister’s son-in-law’s younger sister. In simple terms, a relative of the President. With the President as her support, she had no qualms as she brought hell to any of her artistes.
Looking at Sister Qing’s habits, Jinli swore she was going to be chewed out. Unexpectedly, Sister Qing only glanced at her, spitefully saying “Bai Jinli, you dared to ignore our investor’s requests now? How capable eh?”
Usually, Bai Jinli would be terrified of Sister Qing. Every occasion with Sister Qing scared her shitless, as if she had met her natural enemy.
On the other hand, the strong, independent Sister Qing hated seeing timid, gutless people like Bai Jinli. They simply pissed her off. Every time she met Bai Jinli, her rage never failed to surge from 80% till it blew over the top. This time, however, was different. Jinli was not afraid.
