Chen Ning’s fingers slowly let go of his hands. She closed her eyes and collapsed backwards without strength.
“Ning’er!”
Mochuan was hugely shocked. He hurriedly hugged her. She fell into his arms. Her eyes were closed and tears kept flowing down. A few strands of hair clung to the tears on her face. She looked extraordinarily pale.
“He did it for me. He did it all for me…… I harmed him……” She mumbled. Her voice was so low that it was a whisper.
Mochuan’s heart throbbed in pain. He hugged her, but her body shivered in his arms.
“Ning’er, this isn’t your fault.”
She didn’t seem to hear him. She opened her eyes and looked up at him. Tears kept falling from her eyes.
“If he dies, what am I going to pay him back with? What do I have to do to repay him? Mochuan, tell me. If Shaobai dies like this, will you be guilty for a lifetime? What about me? Can I be happy again? I……”
She suddenly bit her lip hard. Even until there was a fishy sweet taste in her mouth, she still did not let go.
“Ning’er, don’t hurt yourself. You can’t save him like this. I feel bad just like you do.” He looked at the red blooming on her lips. His heart was in even more pain.
“Mochuan, take me there!”
Chen Ning suddenly broke free from his arms and straightened her body. She squared her shoulders and looked steadily at him.
“Go? Go where?” Mochuan was startled.
“I’m going to see him. I have to go see him.” She met his eyes and looked firm.
“Okay. I’ll take you there tomorrow morning.” Mochuan didn’t hesitate and nodded.
“I can’t wait until tomorrow. Mochuan, take me there now.” She grabbed his hand hard.
Didn’t he say that Shaobai was about to die? If he couldn’t last through tonight, then she wouldn’t be able to see him.
Mochuan looked at her. Her expression had calmed down. But her eyes still flickered with a burning light. He knew that if she couldn’t see Chu Shaobai, no matter what, her heart would not rest assured.
When they arrived at Imperial Physician Zhang’s fu, dawn had not broken yet.
Mochuan took her and jumped down from the roof. He landed in the yard and an alert voice immediately cried out from inside, “Who is it?!”
A faint gray shadow floated out of the room. It was Zhuifeng.
He looked at Mochuan and Chen Ning standing in the yard. He was startled and hurriedly bowed. “Paying respects to the Emperor and the Empress.”
“Emperor, Empress, you…… Why are you here?” Xiao Si followed Zhuifeng out of the door and was also surprised.
“Where is Shaobai?” Mochuan directly asked.
“In…… In the room. Imperial Physician Zhang is performing acupuncture on him.” Xiao Si stammered.
Mochuan was slightly relieved. He turned to look at Chen Ning. She was looking at the shining candle against the paper window as if she was looking at the light of hope. She didn’t even blink.
She looked a lot calmer than he had thought.
“Ning’er, Imperial Physician Zhang is performing acupuncture on Shaobai. Do you want to take a look?” He asked softly.
“En.”
She had also heard Xiao Si’s words. She knew that he was alive. That elegant and handsome young man, who had smiled at her and brought her warmth during her darkest and most frustrated days, was still alive!
The door was ajar. She stood in front of it for a moment and slowly walked inside.
